i really like the idea of making art on money. what a great way for art to be spread. i’m going to have to come up with some money art myself. but ssssshhhhhhh…. dont tell the government.

you’ve gotta check out spoiledphotos.com
that is just too incredible

alright, i know this has been photo heavy but its been awhile and this is something too creative to not pass on. very amazing artist from germany painted a car into invisibility. yup! try and make sense of this!

Sara Watson, a design student studying drawing at the University of Central Lancashire, spent three weeks taking a battered old Skoda and making it "disappear" by painting it so that it blends in with the surrounding area. The BBC reports that the car is now being used as advertising for the local recycling firm that donated the vehicle.

thanks wooster!

and to end, i must say happy birthday to my beautiful mother. she just turned 50! and happy mothers day too!

thank you for my life mom.

and this one is all about me. and johnny depp.

entertain my vanity and skim this post. i know a good few people are interested in knowing what i am up to in these passing days… well here you have it.

i moved to san diego a few weeks back. i am living in a strange part of town called pacific beach. this place is pretty lacking. not much culture and not much going on. a college feel all the way through but im seeking the brighter sides of town. ive met some nice people here and i believe pb and i are beginning to understand one another better.

i live 7 blocks from the beach which is great. i can walk surfboard under arm from my apartment door and in 20 minutes be in the water. the breaks here are hardly true san diego (oh my sweet beautiful north county) but the waves break and it is good.

i work here in pb as well. i was hired as the low man on the totem pole for this little non-profit organization called aquatic adventures. its a pretty rad little spot that works on supplementing education for urban youth about science, the ocean and nature through tuition-free programs, etc.
i consider myself very fortunate to be a part of this (especially in these crazy little econ times). i really like the people i work with and they all seem to like me. im going whale watching tomorrow (field trip for the kiddies, i just get to tag along). i’ve actually never been whale watching and seeing as im probably too frugal to ever pay for such a thing, doing it for free will be a blast.

my motorcycle is running strong and im getting much better at riding it. its my daily driver now so i have to get fluent at this, right?  i even got my motorcycle permit so im no longer driving illegally. shoot, i even have insurance! im basically the man!

i started going to this nice little church as well. its nothing too exciting but the people all seem quite charming. some strange folks but it keeps things interesting. i’ve always been a sucker for the crazies anyways.

so yup, God has been really quite wonderful to me. i know it seems trite when folks say it, but i was having a rough time here and there and everytime i seemed to go to God it all became sorted. really. im a new believer all over again.

alright, well thats enough about me. how about some neat stuff?

his ‘introspective on silliness’ has to be one of the finer pieces of writing ive read in a spell. really, its worth peeking at.

and for you lucky few that made it all the way to the bottom… what you all came for…

goosebumps, photographs, and scale model fun.

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

well im starting to settle in here…. good ole san diego. warmer than chicago but absolutely lacking culture and diverse people. i have yet to explore thoroughly so i wont pass such heavy judgement… yet.

you all have to check out this guys website —-> www.collinmartin.com

everything he seems to do is dang near gold. amazing art and a great blog too. he has one of the best set-ups ive ever seen in chicago. amazing studio spot and a rad outlook on his days. i picked a few of my favorite shots of his but this guy isnt just a photog. he fruitboots too. i ripped all these off his website (via screen saves) so all credits point to him.

my good good good friend patina sent me this link to another razzling amazing artist. she does these incredible paintings that look like models. and im into models so for me it all comes together with this! thanks patina for the shout!

amy-bennett

i dont know what it is about scale models but shoot it pulls the inner child in me right into the living room floor. i want to bust out my legos and lincoln logs. that sorta reminds me of when i was a kid and lincoln logs were all the rage. my family was a bit on the poorer side during some of those old days so my folks made 3 huge canvas sacks full of lincoln logs for each of us boys (i am one of 3 brothers). my dad individually sculpted each log and my mom painted every one of them, color coordinated too! and we never new it. amazing thing was we always had the best set of anyone we knew. and that challenge still stands.

speaking of family, i recently gave my sister angela all of my goosebumps books. when i was a kid i freakin ate those books up. i had a huge collection (over 50?). eventually they just became trophies on a shelf piling dust more than new worn pages. angela is a teacher so i passed them along to her for her classroom. the kids were geeked. she sent me this snappy. makes me proud!

alright, well i have bombarded you kind folks enough with this novella of a post. go enjoy your sun-shining day.

the mackerel sky knows all

well nothing quite went the way we planned. and that is usually the case with life, travel, and the sorts. travis, lauren, and i left chicago on the tenth of january hopeful for a warmer life out west. after an amazing going away party my friends threw for us, we hit the road. we picked up this kid named will. will is a 22 yr old art school drop out who for the past three years has been traveling by any means possible. from freight trains to craigslist ride shares, he has seen it all. and we were happy to have him along.

so as some of you may know, travis, lauren, and i all bought a $900 dodge caravan to get our things out west. travis already had a car. a 96 volvo stationwagon. against my initial better judgement, we ended up taking two cars. thats why we needed a fourth driver (enter will).

with a late start, we aimed to get to wichita, kansas. a lofty goal, but i was hopeful. we ended up just staying the night in a cheap little motel in kansas city. so not quite our goal, but it would do. the next day we aimed to drive a long distance to albuquerque, new mexico. my friend hayley offered to set us up at her parents place out there but we didnt quite make it.

in a small town called liberal, kansas (just outside the Oklahoma border) we had a little bit of trouble. travis did a silly thing (if you know him, ask him about it.. its funny. if you dont know him email him at travis.irvin@gmail.com).  so after this little bit of chaos we drove some 20 hours straight until we couldnt go any further.  we stayed the night in the cars on the side of the highway in a rest area. cold too. the desert gets mighty cold.

01-23-09-road-trip-west-237-copy

the next day we drove a good portion of the day until we were a few hours outside of Las Vegas. Then suddenly on the highway Travis pulls over as his Volvo chugs along. The motor then blew up. (see photo above… notice Will waving happily as the Volvo pours oil from under her hood). Yup, totalled. His car was junked and we were stuck on the side of the road. After a little tow into town, and staying the night there, he scrapped his car for $40 and we rented a car and drove to Vegas.

01-23-09-road-trip-west-271-copy

We had hoped to see the Grand Canyon but the road Travis was told to take via his GPS brought us deep into the desert, not quite seeing the Grand Canyon. As night fell upon us we turned the cars around and drove right to Vegas.

01-23-09-road-trip-west-245-copy

Now, I’ve been to this little desert misery town a few times and I always feel the same way about it. Its neat to pass through but it offers very little in regards to culture and interest. But it’s this gateway to the west and usually you have to pass through it on road trips. So once again, I find myself in Vegas. We spent very little time here though. We bailed on that city and drove through the night til we got to San Francisco.

So, please understand… I am making this journey seem much shorter and much easier than it was. I have traveled a fair amount and I’ve been on piles of road trips. Never in my life have I been on a worse trip than this one. Truly, I am trying to keep this light for the children’s eyes, but dang this trip was misery. Good folks, but miserable times.

01-23-09-road-trip-west-246-copy

Finally we make it to San Francisco. We had hoped to live here for a few months but due to ultra tight housing markets, all the neat places are rented and nothing is affordable. Apparently SF has some of the best tenant protection laws so once you rent in SF you dont want to leave. So not much is available. We stayed at my super good friend Melle’s house. She is a Chicago native as well and she is a darling. We were completely taken care of by that angel and I am very certain that not many people like her exist in this world. Also, huge shout to Mona (the owner of Melle’s place). She let us wreck her place and we even stayed for a root beer kegger. Good days over there.

So you’re wondering what happened to Will? We dropped him off in downtown SF and he seems to just wander about from there. I spoke with him a bit but dang I was bummed to see him go. He was a good addition to the trip. I hope to travel with him a bit soon. Maybe even on the freights???  Oh, and check out his tattoos that he has either done himself or by a friend with a method he calls ’stick-and-poke’. pretty dang gnarly.

01-23-09-road-trip-west-250-copy

San Francisco didn’t work out and we tried for Oakland. That was a bust so we went up to Berkeley. That almost worked but we were all so tired and over it that when it wasn’t coming together we scrapped the whole plan and moved to San Diego. So with only the van now, we threw away lots of stuff and re-packed all our gear. We headed south to sunny southern California.

Once we got to San Diego we stayed with my friend Eli. He is the brother of a good good good great friend of mine named Croyde. Croyde is currently kicking it overseas with his pretty little honey but he went above and beyond and set us up with his brother. Eli showed us love and affection and let us crash his spot for a few days.

Then, yesterday, we found our own home.

trompos and the sorts.

Wednesday, October 8, 2008 · 3 Comments

i dedicate this post to trompos. this fun little children’s toy is seen in many variations throughout cultures of the world, but ah yes… in colombia it is quite the rage. i decided to try and learn this craft and ended up just barely grappling with the basics. oh, and i also took a trompo to the face (an honest accident, thanks to the colombian police).

i decided to make it my mission to have the people teach me. so i asked doormen, children, police, and old people to show me the tricks of the trade. it wasn’t entire unsuccessful, but i have a long road ahead of me if i ever hope to make it professionally.

this first photograph is of enrique (the doorman in ben’s building). he really got into it, which i found to happen for many of the adults when a trompo is placed in front of them.

enrique giving lessons to benjo.

next i found some colombian police officers. apparently it is illegal to take snappies of them so unfortunately i had to be surreptitious in my style. sorry friends, feet only for this one.

a little while later a couple of kids approached me and offered me lessons. “gordita” was the ringleader of this tribe.

i really enjoyed this kid a lot. he was really excited to meet foreigners. and dang, just look at that smile. trompos ARE fun!

and then there was this guy. he knew all the tricks and he was easily the hero of trompos. just admire those moves! he even did a hand to hand exchange with me (yes while i was snapping that piece of work!).

hand to hand

so yes. trompos. thats where its at. if you want to play with one, give me a yell. i have piles of them now.

a few good friends

Monday, September 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

well tomorrow i hop to the airport of bogota and if all goes according to plans and hopes, i should be back safely in chicago a twinkle before midnight and wednesday morning. i just wanted to dedicate this little post to ships. big ships, little ships, and the best ships. friendships.

(es un chiste)

alright, so my time in colombia has been more than phenomenal. i will be leaving this palace of a nation with many new friends, a few old friends, and piles of friends awaiting me in chicago. ah yes, the good life.

two of my best mates in all the world, in one little city. bboy benjo hailing from chicago (living in the bog-town) and felipe, a true colombian coffee man (from bogota).

this photograph is one felipe took. ask ben for the story. im not sure i can tell it openly. email him at ben.jorian@gmail.com        I am certain he will happily share the background for a photo so great. take a good look at his face and then look at mine. yup, his lips tell it all. good ole strong man ben passed out in my arms. like a nancy. ah yes, but as a good friend i was there to hold and cradle his lifeless body.

and felipe. what a lad. what can i say about a guy who let me crash his throne for a month and a half, eat all his food, and flirt with his maid? truly, a marvelous specimen of a man.

so yeah, sure this post is a little more sappy and beat that the usual explosion of neat things and interesting reads, but meh! and so it goes.

colombia- the best place in the whole wide world

Friday, September 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

sure it is common knowledge that colombia is dangerous and rugged and not a place for foreigners. it made the #5 spot for places Americans should not go, according to the US State Department (following the #4 spot for Venezuela, which I surprisingly found to really be that bad). I do not believe Colombia to be that place though. This country has been nothing but absolutely beautiful. The people, the food, the landscapes, and the great prices for everything…   truly, i have never been to a more fabulous place.

this photo here is one i took of a neighborhood called san javier. it is up in the foothills of medellin, which was once the drug and murder capital of colombia for a long time. this place is notorious in myth and legend, and history too. for me though, san javier held some of the most incredible beauty i have ever known. i will put more photos up as i upload them. (i had a memory card scare, many photos gone… hoping to recover them soon though)

i could go on and on, and i probably will. but for sake of a quick short post i will leave you all with one more image that displays the true beauty that colombia currently holds.
