apparently invisibility isn’t that far off. some smart scientists have found a way to engineer some fancy materials that can redirect light around a 3-D object. thats huge! i am excited to have some invisibility options in the near future.
i included a really neat image of the invisibility cloak that wells wrote so extensively in ‘the invisible man’ but you probably can’t see it. (get it?)
other fun things going on….
one of my greatest friends in the whole wide world is getting married. and did i mention he just became a PhD man as well? congratulations bryn martin!
thats bryn and rachel in a swanky asian joint. they are set to waltz the aisle this saturday.
also i am going to south america (colombia, venezuela…) in a couple of days, for a month and a half. i will hopefully send some fun updates from there.
behold the brilliance of Chicago’s very own photography studio- Mole & Thomas and 18,000 men
as our nation’s current foreign policies continue to send troops abroad for reasons less and less sensible, i have been thinking about ways we could better spend our taxpayers money and the lives of our troops. before we get too political here, let us just enjoy some ways they did it in the past. ah yes, the early part of the 20th century. sure they were busy with the great war and the great slump, but they sure found neat ways to pass the time.
armed with piles of men and women in the services, the US government had an idea: sell war bonds! so with the help of a chicago photography company and lots of servicemen, they got to it.
wow! is that a living portrait of our 28th president, woodrow wilson?? why yes, yes it is!
and some more dazzling images for your eyes delight!
blurgh! i know, i know, who enjoys frost? don jaime tells me matt svalina does. i havent read enough of him to decide. ah well, he is right. the air is warm indeed!
well its been a while, but this new entry is action packed to make up for it.
spring is here and chicago is finally warm again. retire those coats and grab a cold drink. enjoy!
some old folks rumbling. check out that mean punch!
i came across this little website. with some amazing photoshop skills these photos show what celebrities would look like if they were from oklahoma. these are a few of my personal favorites.
johnny depp
jennifer aniston
britney spears
there are more complete archives available here too.
and as though you’d need a reason to stop using your toilet…
my friend josh asked me to pass on the links to some snakes in toilet stories and after a quick google search here is what i found:
The Federal Bureau of Statistics reports that in 1997, there were 105 reported toilet bowl snake attacks, resulting in 17 fatalities. In 1998, there were 135 attacks and 30 fatalities. In 1999, 200 attacks were reported, and 50 fatalities. http://www.uncoveror.com/potty.htm
And if you’re interested in the stories… here are some links.
this artist is logan hicks. he is (in my opinion) the most intricately skilled urban artist of today. he does these multi-layer stencils that can make a child’s head explode. yes, that means his art is really really good. those of you that know me a bit know that i have been into some stencil art for a twinkle of time and i have now decided to take it to the next level. yes, i am answering the call of duty. (not to be confused with the video game, of which i have never played.)
wow. i could just cry looking at those. amazing. yet again, adjectives you fail me.
this next photograph was sent to me from my dearest friend felipe, who hails from bogota, colombia. im not sure if it is his, but either way i did a little editing in it to show where my house is. you know, in case anyone wants to come over and share some mate and chocolate. chicago from 36,000 feet.
i’m fairly certain i nailed the correct location of my place. of course, im willing to be challenged by those up for it.
and lastly the finances. skip this if it bothers you to know what i spend.
$57.51- t-mobile!
$18.87 - market for some foods
$5.46- subway (i was hungry and there were no other options in the building i work in)
$25- home depot (new construction job so i needed a decent belt and hammer)
$6.01- chocolate chips and powered sugar (im a baking man you know)
its often said that 40,000 americans are injured by their toilets annually. i never really understood that arcane statistic until recently. i came across this in the news the other day and i believe it holds such significance im obligated to pass it along. apparently a kansas woman sat on her boyfriend’s toilet for two years and the skin of her rear end grew around the toilet seat. she had to have it surgically removed. why anyone would allow themselves to get in that situation is beyond me, but what id really like to know is how someone could let their GIRLFRIEND do that?! im not sure it even counts to have a girlfriend in that situation. read the full story here.
in more exciting news….
my typewriter is here! its a very sharp remington rand (circa 1940s) with a flash case. its basically my new laptop. i am having some ribbon problems but i will work the kinks out and letters will pour forth in no time!
i have some new loose finances but i have to tally them all up. cell phone bill, fruits and veggies, books… the essentials really. oh well, next time. happy ides of march.
i’ve been really into milk crates lately. im realizing they just might be one of the greatest but under-rated creations of our modern day. i mean think about it! the job of the door-to-door milkman has been essentially eradicated, and yet the milk delivery scene is actually alive and well. recent statistics mark that there are over 20 million missing milk crates a year. that means its not just the milkmen that get enjoyment out of these time tested sturdy crates.
milk crate jumping.
theres even an amazing, action-packed blog that follows the fun and practicality of milk crates.
i have some other neat things to pass on, but for now i guess thats enough. too much excitement for one day can cause a critical system error sensory overload.
so lastly- catching up on the finances:
paid back daver the $4 i owed him. also, i owed harishi $10 so i paid that back too. we went out to dinner for my friend audi’s bday. that was $20. then, i managed to spend a whole heap of money at some southside thrift stores and also for groceries. $7.01+$25.70+$10=$42.71 spending total $76.71
not too bad so far. in other news, my typewriter is in tomorrow!
one of my best mates in all of the world is bryn martin. aside from being a world renowned scholar, and musician, he is also one of the coolest guys you’ll ever know. he’s the kind of person you wish you were more like.
anyways, he sent me this link to a page that had a neat video on it. unfortunately i couldn’t figure out how to link the video so i just uploaded it to youtube myself. it really makes you realize how small (and perhaps insignificant) we truly are. beautiful really.
another neat thing that came across my desk(top) is from my other amazing friend ben. ben is a break dancing bike messenger that now hails from buenos aires. he has a neat blog that you can find here–> http://redhotmoon7.blogspot.com/
so anyways, ben sent me a neat link to another bike messengers blog. i know these may be too many links for some people, but its worth giving a read to. http://dispatch101.blogspot.com/
and lastly, a photo of bryn with junglebook. he is locking her up nice and safe!
im really in to what this guy is doing. he utilizes this HDR technique that allows for these grandiose images to blow our minds. this is from his chicago set. his name is Trey Ratcliff.
similiar to my photo! (see previous post ‘bring on the spring’)
i did not spend a single cent today! i did however spend $3 on a show last night. thanks daver for floating me the other $4.
Dig deep in that couch and raid your roommate’s piggy bank! The NeverLand Ranch is for sale! If you have a cool $40 million sitting around, that palace can be yours!
well lets be thankful we aren’t named leila. unless of course you are named leila. a true tale. apparently some glitch in verizons system sends all messages typed to leila to one recipient. a lucky gal! check out her blog!
i spent a small fortune today. james joyce (my roommate) and i hit the local thrift before class today. i managed to spend $11.36, and that is on half-off monday! shoot! so what sort of loot did i make off with? glad you asked.
this very fine bread holder (poinsettia’s were already here)
a fancy crayon-box-colored sweater
and some other stuff (some books, 2 pairs of brown pants, a little green watering pail).
that’s not it. i also bought a bottle of wine for a friend and i bought myself 2 bottles of sicilian wine. total: $33.00
